Name of bike trail: Family Cycle Trail
Length: 14 miles
A 14 mile way-marked circuit, with connecting routes to several villages, including Parkend. Follows wide gravelled tracks and is suitable for riding all year round. Mostly level gradients with some short climbs and suitable for all ages and abilities. The route passes along the old Severn and Wye railway line, passing former stations at Drybrook Road, Cannop Wharf and Speech House. Remnants of former coalmines can be seen at Foxes Bridge, Lightmoor and New fancy. It also passes near Beechenhurst Lodge, which has a large café and toilet facilities.
The Forest of Dean Family Cycle Trail was voted into the top 10 family cycle trails in the country, in an article published by The Daily Telegraph at the end of 2008.
Picking up the connecting trail, from Parkend, leads you into the Cannop Valley and onto the Family Trail circuit. The route is way-marked, although it is recommended that you purchase an official route-map; available from Pedalabikeaway, Beechenhurst Lodge or the Tourist Information Centre in Coleford.
